OCM 11g Preparation - Create and manage multiple network configuration files

You may think: I know how to create and manage network configuration files. I simply run netca or netmgr and setup my needs. And what if they ask you to set this up using no GUI ?

So, doing it manually is not hard also. Personally, after many years of oracle experience I don't know by heart the syntax. So what do I do? I look up in the docs!

Even if you know the syntax, going to the docs, copying a template and adapting is much faster in my opinion.

So exercise:

  • How to use netca.
  • How to use netmgr.
  • How to setup all things in sqlnet.ora / tnsnames.ora manually.
  • There are some sqlnet.ora parameters that cannot be configured using GUI.
  • There are also cman.ora and ldap.ora. I would recommend understanding them.
  • How to get a quickly find in the Official Doc if you need it.
  • How to change the network things via EM.

Path to Documentation:

Database Administration -> Net Services Reference
Database Administration -> Net Services Administrator's Guide (this one has an example link, very useful)

    * Change ALL settings in netmgr and see how it affects the three major SQLNet files:
    - sqlnet.ora
    - tnsnames.ora
    - listener.ora.

see what you CAN NOT enable/disable using the netmgr GUI. As Rodrigo suggested, go through the Reference doc, briefly get familiar with ALL parameters. You may need at least to know what they do.

    * Practice setting up Load Balancing and Connect-time failover (you can setup basics in netmgr)

    * Practice setting up TAF (you CAN NOT set this up in netmgr)

  1. Hello Rodrigo,

netmgr can be run in silent mode? I have not found it on the internet... It has just GUI mode?

    1. Hi Mariami,

      netmgr has just GUI mode.

      Regards,
      Rodrigo
