OCM 11g Preparation - Recommended Hardware

As we will need to create RAC, Dataguard, Single Instance and Oracle EM machines scenarios, let's consider a scenario where we will need to simulate 4 VMs running at the same time. To this work in your system, you will need at least:

  • 16 GB RAM
  • Quad core fast CPU (Something similar or better than a Core i5)
  • 250 GB Flash Storage HD

This is the scenario I'm actually using to study and I didn't have any problem until now.

Oracle also gives an important information about the keyboard:

It is also recommended that candidates practice on the type of keyboard that they expect to find in OCM Test Center.

  • All countries, except those listed will use country-specific keyboards
    • United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Greece, Croatia, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovak Republic, Egypt, Israel, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand.

As I'm complete used to my country's keyboard (Brazil ABNT2) and I'm going to do the exam in USA, I needed somehow to practice with an US layout. I study using my notebook and carrying a keyboard in my bag was not a solution.

I resolve this gap putting the keyboard layout of my VM's in the USA standard. So when I type any key I need to forget what is written and just pretend some other symbol is there! You can put some stickers with letters in the keys to force you adapt with the exam KB layout.

I heard some people saying that you can bring your own keyboard during the exam. After talking to some OCM proctors, they said this is not officially accepted. The keyboard is a hardware and is even listed to them as an item banned during the exam. So you can try to bring yours, but be prepared to not be able to use it.

    Hi, Rodrigo.
This month I've began my preparation to OCM 11g exam. In my roadmap I'm planning to take the exam in 2015 lasts months (similar to you). Neither I can't take the exam in my country (Spain) and I'll have to travel to UK or Slovakia to do it.

I expect we'll be in contact about this objective.
    Greetings.

    1. Hi Alvoro! Very nice to hear that =]

    Dear Rodrigo,
Thanks for sharing many usefull info..I have just started preparation and planning to go for exam by End Apr 2015. Setting rather tight target..lets see.
Started preparing on my AIX env, at first, since it would take some time to setup exact exam setup and I don't have hardware yet.
I am targetting 1 week for per exam section ( total 9 of them ) for fist iteration giving around 4 hr per day.
After 1st iteration, I think subsequent round of iteration should be much faster..lets see how it goes. I will exchange information along the way..happy new year and happy preparation.

    regards,

    Satya

    1. Hi Satya! It's nice to hear that you are also preparing for the exam. Your goal time is really shorter but with enough practical experience it is enough.
Let exchanging experience! Happy New Year and good luck with your studies =]
      Best wishes.

My testing center will be in singapore most probably.

can you please update on what kind of keyboards are mostly used.

    1. Hi Su,
Singapore is in the list of countries that will NOT have country specific keyboards. So you can expect US keyboard there.
Anyway, in your place I would send an email to your local Oracle Education just to confirm before taking the exam.

      Regards,
      RJ
