{"id":1219,"date":"2015-01-09T16:23:23","date_gmt":"2015-01-09T19:23:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dbarj.com.br\/?p=1219"},"modified":"2019-10-23T17:01:21","modified_gmt":"2019-10-23T20:01:21","slug":"resume-oracle-duplicate-database-failed-recovery-datafiles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dbarj.com.br\/en\/2015\/01\/resume-oracle-duplicate-database-failed-recovery-datafiles\/","title":{"rendered":"Resume an Oracle DUPLICATE database that failed on RECOVERY of datafiles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A time ago, the problem that I used to face was the failure of the recovery part of the duplicate\u00a0script for any problems (like forgetting to set the db_recovery_area_dest_size big enough to hold the archives that will come from duplicate) and I ended up having to start the DUPLICATE command all over again. The recovery part would bring only some GBs,\u00a0less than 1% compared to the size of the full backup restore part (about <strong>500 GBs<\/strong>). So, running it again was a big waste of time.<\/p>\n<p>To resume the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>DUPLICATE<\/strong><\/span> command, I started to dissect it. Here I will show an example of how to resume a tape backup duplicate that failed in the recovery part.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">PS: Before starting, as stated in the comments, it&#8217;s important to say that <strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">DUPLICATE<\/span><\/strong> is most of the times a <strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">RESUMABLE<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0operation, as soon as you trigger it again <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>WITH SAME SINTAX<\/strong> <\/span>and with your destination database back in <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NOMOUNT<\/strong><\/span>. It will skip on most cases the already retrieved datafiles and archivelogs. This article is more intended to understand its internals in very particular cases or when you need a manual approach. Just consider it if you already tried running the same command again and it downloaded everything. =]<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Scenario:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Source DB: <strong>DBPROD<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Destination DB: <strong>DBTEST<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I create my own pfile for\u00a0<strong>DBTEST<\/strong>, set up the parameters and created the directories.<\/p>\n<p>After starting the database in nomount, I issued the command:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"EnlighterJSRAW\" data-enlighter-language=\"oracledb\">-- My DUPLICATE command\r\n\r\nconnect target mdoxdba\/\"xxx\"@dbprod\r\nconnect auxiliary mdoxdba\/\"xxx\"@dbtest\r\nconnect catalog rman\/\"xxx\"@rmanbkp\r\n\r\nRUN\r\n{\r\n\tSET UNTIL TIME \"to_date('2015-01-06 00:00:00','yyyy-mm-dd hh24:mi:ss')\";\r\n\tALLOCATE AUXILIARY CHANNEL T1 TYPE 'sbt_tape';\r\n\tDUPLICATE TARGET DATABASE TO 'dbtest';\r\n}<\/pre>\n<p>Note that my until time is <strong>06\/Jan<\/strong>. My latest full was on <strong>03\/Jan<\/strong>. After that, the DUPLICATE created the controlfile with only the SYSTEM datafile. It then\u00a0performed\u00a0a &#8220;<strong>switch datafile all<\/strong>&#8221; to add the rest.<\/p>\n<p>When it started the RECOVER step, I aborted it.<\/p>\n<p>So, how can\u00a0we resume that?<\/p>\n<p>First, we need to finish the recovery. Let&#8217;s open again the <strong>rman<\/strong> connecting to auxiliary, target and catalog servers (if present) and then rerun the recovery step.<\/p>\n<p>Note below that I allocate the auxiliary From here, we have 2 ways to finish our task: The easy and obvious way OR\u00a0the DUPLICATE way (dissecting it). I will show you both:<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">1. The easy way:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Finally, let&#8217;s open the database with resetlogs:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"EnlighterJSRAW\" data-enlighter-language=\"oracledb\">SQL&gt; alter database open resetlogs;\r\n\r\nDatabase altered.\r\n\r\nSQL&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>Ok. Your database is ready now.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">2. The DUPLICATE dissected\u00a0way:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The DUPLICATE command do a lot of extra steps, probably because it can receive a lot of combinations of conditions,\u00a0such as\u00a0skipping some tablespaces. It is a more generic implementation mode to handle a wider range of cases:<\/p>\n<p>To simulate, first let&#8217;s put the database in NOMOUNT\u00a0state again to recreate the controlfile\u00a0(note that I did it still using the RMAN session):<\/p>\n<pre class=\"EnlighterJSRAW\" data-enlighter-language=\"oracledb\">RMAN&gt; RUN\r\n2&gt; {\r\n3&gt;    shutdown clone immediate;\r\n4&gt;    startup clone nomount ;\r\n5&gt; }\r\n\r\ndatabase dismounted\r\nOracle instance shut down\r\n\r\nconnected to auxiliary database (not started)\r\nOracle instance started\r\n\r\nTotal System Global Area    7081771008 bytes\r\n\r\nFixed Size                     2147080 bytes\r\nVariable Size               3283610872 bytes\r\nDatabase Buffers            3791650816 bytes\r\nRedo Buffers                   4362240 bytes\r\n\r\nRMAN&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>Next, instead of recreating the controlfile with all datafiles, oracle will only create it with the SYSTEM datafile. Let&#8217;s do that. Otherwise, it would fail.\u00a0In fact, when is RMAN that runs, it doesn&#8217;t need to execute those &#8220;sets&#8221; in the final block because this was already done in the beggining.\u00a0As the session is the same, it does not need to rerun them.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>So, finally, open your DB with resetlogs:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"EnlighterJSRAW\" data-enlighter-language=\"oracledb\">RMAN&gt; run\r\n2&gt; {\r\n3&gt;    Alter clone database open resetlogs;\r\n4&gt; }\r\n\r\ndatabase opened\r\n\r\nRMAN&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>And that&#8217;s it!
