OCM 11g Preparation - Use Recovery Manager to perform database backups

Creating an efficient backup strategy is important to reduce your recover time. If your system is critical, the backup procedure must be setup accordingly to meet the SLA requirements.

For OCM exam, I have no idea what they will ask. Keep in mind to trace some plan to restore/recover what you need in the most efficient way.

Thus, practice:

  • Back up the whole system or single tablespaces / datafiles
  • Back up archive logs
  • Creating backup as copy / backupset / compressed backupset
  • Recover your backups to gain time during restore/recover
  • Switch datafiles to copy to avoid the time need to restore
  • Backup full / incremental (diferential/cumulative)
  • Crosscheck backup / archive log
  • Validate / Backup Validate / Restore Validate (including LOGICAL check)
  • "List" / "Report" syntax
  • DBA views to check corruption / free FRA space / configuration / backup files
